Anne Schlebusch
Anne Schlebusch is 74 years old. When her debut novel for adults, Bloomer, was published she was 70, like its protagonist. This deft author is no stranger to writing though, having been a co-author of language textbooks and a curriculum guide. She has written five Young Adult novels, becoming a 1995 Joint Winner of the ‘Young Africa Award’ with one of them. In 2020 her short story was longlisted in the Kwela Corona Competition. In 2023 her first published short story, “The Stars Walk Backwards” appeared in the anthology “Mother Bliss”, published by Tattoo Press. She has been published 3 times by Karavan Press so far – once a short story (in “Temperature” 2024) and twice flash fiction in “In Other Stories” (2024 and 2025).
After completing her MPhil in Applied Language Studies (cum laude) at UCT in 1995, Anne left teaching to join the Western Cape Education Department, and concluded her long and illustrious career with a decade as Director for Business Strategy.
